[150708] 'Cart' Director Boo Ji Young And Producer Shim Jae Myung Discuss The Acting Debut Of EXO's D.O. [EXCLUSIVE]

When South Korean director Boo Ji Young and producer Shim Jae Myung recently appeared at the New York Asian Film Festival, as part of a retrospective titled "Myung Films: Pioneers and Women Behind the Camera in Korean Film," the editorial staff of our sister publication KdramaStars was eager to talk to them. When we found out the star-studded cast of Boo's critically acclaimed second film "Cart" includes none other EXO's D.O. (listed in the credits under his real name Do Kyung Soo), in his acting debut, we were excited to share this interview with KpopStarz readers. Released in September, "Cart" examines the plight of older Korean women who were laid off from their part-time jobs at a big-box store. The film is based on a true story of a local labor uprising in 2007 when cashiers at E.Land Mart Retail were fired after their jobs were outsourced to temporary workers, prompting the terminated workers to go on a stay-in strike for 510 days.

KDramaStars: “Cart” marked the acting debut of EXO’s D.O. What are your thoughts on his performance in the film and his reception in subsequent projects like the drama “It’s Okay, That’s Love?”

Boo Ji Young: [D.O's] character of Choi Tae Young was an attempt to make the film more accessible to the youth. It was a special attempt on the part of the film’s producers. I had no thoughts about casting an idol star. But then I met him. After seeing his image and talking to him, I thought he would be a very good fit for the role. He read the script and he proved that he could be very strong in his acting, as well. Afterwards, he appeared in two dramas, “It’s Okay, That’s Love” and “I Remember You.” After seeing him in these dramas, I thought that he had even more potential than I had envisioned. In one role, he appears to be outgoing, but he has a dark side. In the other, he portrays a murderer. He was so much better in both roles than I had ever expected. But I really I feel that his acting will bloom in movie projects. When it comes to acting, it is more of a film medium where one can show their true talents. I have very high hopes for his next film.

(Omitted unrelated to D.O.)

Radio Audio

A: Please introduce yourself!
DKS: I'm Do Kyungsoo, the one who take Taeyeong role in Cart.

A: I think you are so busy right now. What are you doing when you receive this call?
DKS: I just finished the recording for a music show and now I'm receiving this call.

A: Why are you so handsome like this? What did you eat so you can be that handsome?
DKS: /Laugh endlessly beautifully everything whatever so lovely and can't answer, just laughing cutely/

A: Actually I know Kyungsoo since he was so young. I was once went to a Lake Park and somewhere in one place there is a light that's shining so bright!
DKS: /Laugh again like seriously I'm crying for that/
A: No no. D.O. why are you going around in a Lake Park and releasing such light there back then?? Please answer. This is a question.
DKS: Ah in Lake Park? When I was in middle and high school I live in Ilsan. And back then I used to play in Lake Park a lot.
A: Yes! I saw you at that time!! I know at that time that "that person will do good in singing and acting"!
DKS: /Laugh again like there is no tomorrow/

B: That's really wasting the time! Okay I'll give you a real question. What do you think about Im Siwan??
A: What?!
B: No no I mean I really enjoyed watching Cart. But actually, I was so confused between you and Im Siwan.
DKS: Oh really??
A: Do you feel not good when you hear a comment like that?
B: Ah of course~~
DKS: Ah but no no, seriously. I think Im Siwan sunbaenim's acting is so so so good and I-
A: But but actually when I saw your acting I really think that Do Kyungsoo actor's acting is so good. This is not just a word, seriously. I really enjoyed watching it and...
B: Why are you keep talking about yourself?! Anyway, Cart is your first movie right??
DKS: Yes it's my first movie.

B: What is Cart movie for you?
DKS: I think this movie is a movie that I will remember for the rest of my life. This is my first movie and I worked with a really precious staffs and director happily, so I think this is a really precious movie for me.

A: Then in a relationship matter this is a really meaningful movie, right? But beside that is there something that you feel and you got to know from this movie?
DKS: Actually in my age, I can't have an empathy about an unfair dismissal things. But after I did this movie I got to feel the parents' feeling too, and I think I know about that (unfair dismissal) thing a lot and in detail too now because of this movie.

A: Do Kyungsoo, have you ever try being a part timer in a convenience store or something like that?
DKS: Yes I've ever did that.
B: In what kind of store is it?
DKS: I've ever worked in a meat restaurant...
A: Oh my god! I want to eat a meat from D.O.!!

B: You still have a plan to work as an actor in the future too, right?
DKS: Yes yes..
B: What kind of actor do you want to be?
DKS: I think I will talk about that kind of things later. Rather than "he is a this or that kind of actor", when the public saw me, I wish they will think something like "ah turns out that person is a really cool/very fine person".

A: As a singer its normal to have a role model but how about as an actor. Do you have a role model?
DKS: I actually don't really have an exact role model but... Hmm...
A & B: /Fighting over the question, why give this kind of questions etc cause Kyungsoo can't answer HAHAHAHA/

B: Then what kind of movie do you like??
DKS: Because I really like movies, I watch all kind of movies without any distinction. I watched action movies too, mellow movies too, and I think I watched all kind of movie genre.

A: Kyungsoo, do you watched Jangsoo Shop movie recently?
DKS: Yes I watched it already.
A: Chanyeol came out as one of the cast in that movie, right? And he said that he is a number one in acting between all EXO members. What do you think about it?
DKS: Ah he said that?
A: Yes.
DKS: Hmmm... But if Chanyeol think like that about himself then...
A & B: /Laugh out loud even before Kyungsoo finished lmao/
B: Kyungsoo you are so fun!!

A: He came to Old School a few days ago, he said that in the EXO's group chat you didn't say anything and just read it all.
B: Chanyeol said that you are actually a ghost-member there. Why you didn't do anything there when there is a conversation?
DKS: Ah... I actually just don't have anything to say there so I was just...
A: Oh are you an introvert?
DKS: Can I say that I'm introvert? I just... Really like a quiet place and..
A: Are you similar with Taeyeong in Cart?
DKS: Yeah a little. There is a lot of part of me that's kinda similar with Taeyeong.
A: So you're the type that likes a book, and likes to listen to a music, right?
DKS: Book... I didn't really like to read a book hahahahahahaha!

A: Okay I wish after the releases of your next movie where you become the lead actor, you can come to Cinetown 19 as a lead actor.

[141030 Trans] Magazine M - “Do Kyungsoo: It doesn’t matter however you call me. Whichever way my name gets written in the ending credit, I am still me.”

The sight of him that “growled” on stage as a popular idol member of EXO was no where to be found. Only actor, Do Kyungsoo (21), was seen smiling shyly while saying, “It was exciting to be able to accomplish acting, which has always been a dream of mine.” Seeing the movie only makes the expectations for rookie actor Do Kyungsoo rise higher.

His first screen debut movie, ‘Cart’ (Released November 13, Director Boo Jiyoung), is a story about mart employees being fired overnight. It tells a story about their fight against the unfairness of the company, but on the other hand, also tells a story about an ordinary family and their side of the story. Do Kyungsoo’s character was the main character Sun Hee (Yeom Jungah)’s son, Tae Young. Despite the fact that he is a rebellious teenager that hates the fact that they are poor, he soon learns to understand his mother’s position and becomes a deep minded son. Tae Young’s role makes viewers feel pity as he goes through a harsh reality. He is also put in a different situation wherein he undergoes a similar case of unfair dismissal. He works part time at a convenience store when he gets scammed by an unfair boss. Do Kyungsoo said that “he was able to understand the viewpoints of his parents more.” “I’m quite young, and I started my early adult life as a member of an idol group, so it’s true that the words ‘unfair dismissal’ and ‘union workers’ were not relatable to me at first. As I started to film to movie, I understood more, and it made me think more of my parents who were working hard. Ah, I should be more filial to them (laughs). I feel like viewers who are similar to my age will feel the same way.”

After the movie ‘Cart’ made its first premiere in October in the Busan International Film Festival, there was a never ending praise for the movie itself and Do Kyungsoo’s acting skills. The reactions were very similar in media press conferences too. It was a much expected result. He melted into his character with no burden and successfully portrayed his character. Do Kyungsoo said “I am very glad to hear so many unexpected praises” and also added “but am still full of regrets”. “I am still very regretful of the scene where I become very rebellious and yell at my mother. For me it was very awkward, as I have never been that angry to anyone in my entire life. If there is an opportunity for me to act a yelling scene again I feel that I will do much better next time.” His next comment was an honest and cute comment, as expected from a rookie actor, “I was so surprised while watching the movie. I had no idea I would be given so much screen time!”

To the public, his acting was first revealed in the SBS drama ‘It’s Okay, It’s Love’ that aired in September, but ‘Cart’ was actually filmed first. Partaking in this film was Do Kyungsoo’s first acting attempt, with no previous special lessons on acting at all. Then was his stable acting achieved by a born talent for portraying emotion naturally? Do Kyungsoo waved his hands in denial and smiled. “I never had much tears as a child. Maybe it was because my personality is not the kind to express any hardships I feel but to suppress it deeply and hold it inside of me. That’s why it’s really hard to act crying scenes. It’s to the point that upon seeing my crying scenes the EXO members actually make fun me. I feel as if my emotional understanding has broadened thanks to acting.” He firmly denied it, but it seems true that he is very talented in understanding and becoming one with his characters in order to portray them properly. If that isn’t true, then it would be impossible to leave such a deep impression as both Han Kangwoo, who was Jae Yeol (Jo Insung)’s imagination in ‘It’s Okay, It’s Love’, and the rebellious but deep minded Tae Young in ‘Cart’ in the viewers’ mind.

Now, with both projects having wrapped filming, Do Kyungsoo is only filled with more interest and excitement for acting. “It was such a shame when the filming ended. I really wished that it had not ended yet. As a singer, the job of having to sing on stage and show everything in 4 minutes is very charismatic, but acting was very fun too. Please let me work in anything. Whatever it is, I will work very hard (laughs).” The EXO members are cheering on Do Kyungsoo too. “When I was a trainee; I practiced and worked hard, joined the team in no time and busily prepared for our debut, but there are members who went through a much longer trainee period. There are members who received acting lessons regularly too. Since I started acting first, it would make sense for them to feel disappointed but they all sincerely cheered me on. I’m always thankful for them and feel strengthened by their encouragement.” For all those who are cheering Do Kyungsoo on, he plans to give his best in the future for his acting. “I want to become a great actor even in my sixties.” But do we now call him D.O or Do Kyungsoo? “It doesn’t matter however you call me. Whichever way my name gets written in the ending credit, I am still me (laughs).”
