D.O, who might feel like a stranger to Seoul these days due to performing every week in a large scale tour across Asia, is creating a boy’s scent in the Cheongdamdong Galimard perfume studio. When thinking of “Growl” and “Overdose”, that scent clearly should have been that of a beast-like musk, the scent of leather engraved with thick drops of sweat. However, the boy said that his scent was the exact opposite, one that is clear, soft, full, and with a sweet nuance that lasts a long time.
In the Galimard haute couture perfume design program that D.O experienced, a contest started between him and the Galimard perfume consultant who came as a mentor, Galimard Korea’s director Nam Sang Mi. While smelling all kinds of perfumes in a blind smelling test, D.O diligently defined his style of scent. One could feel how much he wished for a perfume of his own through his honesty and pickiness in making decisions regarding the perfumes. “I really love perfumes. I tried many scents but there wasn’t one that I thought was just right. Usually I use Diptyque’s Tam Dao but it’s not a 100% correct choice. I’m always looking for a perfume that is just like me, one that can express myself well.” He extensively analyzes his style by detailing his favorite foods, colors, and even lifestyle, and is guided through the process of making the scent he is looking for. The decision that was then made is a perfume that is comfortable, warm, and soft, one that is not heavy. If it was a color it would be that of a sky in sunset. Despite being a man’s scent, it is very soft and friendly. “I started using perfumes when I became an adult. I have a resistance for perfumes that are commonly considered to be manly, because it doesn’t suit me yet. I would feel very awkward if I were to use that kind of perfume.”
