[170221] EXO's Chen expresses his charismatic charm for 'Singles'

EXO member Chen made various facial expressions while gracing the cover of the March issue of 'Singles' .

Chen pulled off various looks, from presenting a pure charm to stepping it up to a more powerful charismatic appeal.  Chen commented in an interview regarding his works singing for drama OSTs and such, saying, "2016 was a year in which I became more ambitious. Once the activities of 'Hey Mama' had ended, we went straight to discussing our next project."

He recently collaborated with Dynamic Duo, and the collaboration "Nosedive" had topped music charts. Chen honestly said that he had never been fully satisfied with any of my recordings, and that there was a lot of work to be done for his vocals.

With releasing numerous OST songs, the singer mentioned, "I would like to focus more on the overall message of the song rather than the drama or specific characters. Since I am not an actor, I feel it is right for me to analyze it from a musical approach. I believe once a song is completely understood, then it can be used to fit into the appropriate scene."

[170220] EXO’s Chen Reflects On Past Solo Activities And Successes + Reveals His Aspirations As A Singer

EXO’s Chen recently graced the cover of Singles magazine, where he showcased his stellar looks and a rugged charisma, a sharp contrast to his well-known sweet temperament.

In the accompanying interview, he looked back on the past year and discussed how he’s grown as a singer as well as how he will continue to strive for improvement.

2016 was another year of successes, numerous groundbreaking records, and multiple collaborations for EXO. Chen in particular branched out with many solo and unit promotions, from singing “Imagine” with pianist Steve Barakett at a UNICEF charity concert, to being featured in SM STATION several times, to appearing on “Sugar Man” with fellow member Chanyeol.

Chen also formed a sub-unit with EXO members Xiumin and Baekhyun, and released a mini album as EXO-CBX. “2016 was a year I became more ambitious as a singer, especially as I promoted with EXO-CBX. It was to the point that we started discussing plans for our next album [as this unit] immediately after we finished promoting ‘Hey Mama.'”

In addition, he participated in the OSTs of popular dramas “Descendants of the Sun,” and “Scarlet Heart: Goryeo” in 2016, and was highly praised by many.

“I personally try to understand the message of the song more than the drama characters themselves. I think it’s right for me to approach it from a musical perspective, as I am not an actor. I believe that if I fully understand and sing with an honest mind, then the song will match the scene well,” the singer explained.

The singer has already kicked off 2017 with another OST track, for “Missing 9,” as well as a collaboration with Dynamic Duo on their “Mixxxture” project. Their track “Nosedive” not only showed high results on the music charts, but also gained them a win on “Inkigayo” without any promotions.

Although the vocalist has been gradually gaining recognition for his skills through projects like these, he humbly commented, “I have never been fully satisfied when I listen to what I have recorded. I still have a long ways to go.” Chen revealed that his goal in life is to sing self-composed songs in a genre and style of his choice, and let people know the joy of music.

Chen also discussed his brotherly friendship with member Xiumin, his analog lifestyle, and much more in the full interview and spread, which can be found in Singles’s March issue.

[170104] EXO’s Kai Talks About How Much His Father Supports His Dreams

In a recent interview with Sports Seoul, EXO’s Kai opened up about the strong support he received from his father to follow his dreams.

He shared how his father had originally dreamed of pursuing art, but his family was against it. Therefore, his father wanted Kai to try out whatever he wanted to do. He said, “Ever since I was young, I went to all kinds of music classes. I had the most interest in dance, and so when I was eight, I started ballet and I won a national competition for it.”

He even shared how his father influenced him to join his current agency, SM Entertainment. He revealed, “Even with my SM audition, my father prepared for it. He videotaped all of my dances since I was eight an sent them to SM, and that’s how I was able to audition for them. I faced a lot of obstacles, like not passing my SM audition, but my father always believed in me.”

He continued, “Nowadays, when I meet him, he says, ‘I knew you were going to do well. Even from an objective standpoint, when I saw you dance as a child, you danced really well.'”

Aren’t we all glad for the support of Kai’s father?

[170104] EXO’s Kai Opens Up About Overcoming Slump After Reinjuring Himself

In a recent interview with news outlet Sports Seoul, EXO’s Kai looked back on 2016 and talked about his never-ending passion for dance.

“Personally, [2016] is a year that still holds many regrets for me. I ended up appearing in a wheelchair in front of fans after severely injuring my ankle. I had to go through physical therapy and couldn’t properly dance, something I love to do. In addition, I was extremely stressed that I might injure myself again,” he stated.

Kai later went into more detail, and revealed he ended up falling into a depressive slump while resting for four or five months.

Explaining it was more difficult than expected to regain his spirit, he said, It hasn’t been long since I’ve overcame [the slump]. Normally, I’m the type…who experiences happiness through dance, and am someone who finds joy when I’m standing onstage. But I ended up not being able to do what I wanted to when I injured myself.”

Kai elaborated on the burdens he felt while having to be extra cautious while undergoing treatment, and the reluctance he felt at first to start heavily practicing again. The idol also confessed that while he’s recovered, he’s still not back to his best condition yet.

Moving forward, Kai said that he’s been practicing even more than ever because at one point, he wondered, “What am I doing with myself right now?”

Unsatisfied with how he’s been handling himself, the idol said it was like a fire lit up again inside of him.

He revealed, “On days I don’t have schedules…I practice dancing for five hours, go to acting class for around two or three hours, and then also go to vocal training for three hours. By the time I finish, it’s around 2 a.m.”

Kai ended by saying that he is looking forward to 2017, and that he’ll continue to improve himself.

Are you excited to see what Kai will bring in the new year?

[161108] Kai says his goal is to keep EXO members together in 'Arena' interview

EXO's Kai graced the cover of the latest issue of 'Arena' magazine, and his interview has finally been revealed.

Kai spoke up about how he feels as an EXO member and more, saying, "It's not like we achieved all our goals because we won an award. We have to continue on. Rather than achieving something as an EXO member, I want to keep all the EXO members together until the end. That's become my ultimate goal. Life goals always change."

He added that he's learned a lot as part of the group as well. He said, "I learned a lot of patience, and the anger in my heart has disappeared. In the past, I wasn't able to do group practice well. I always practiced alone. Back then, the other trainees would leave at 9PM, but I'd practice until 12 and 1AM alone. Being with EXO though, I've learned how to work in a group. I also didn't know how to deal with people and didn't have many friends. That's why it was so awkward interacting with fans, but these days, I'm no joke at it. In my opinion, I've become a lot more natural."

Have you noticed Kai's growth?

Q1. Which of the members best fits the following characters:
ㅡ Mother (Nags a lot! The motherly character) →
ㅡ Kwangsoo (He can talk to aliens!? An oddball, weird/strange guy) →
ㅡ Yeonhee (Ideal type) →

Q2. If you were Yeonhee, who would you choose between the boastful Chanyeol and the kind D.O?

Q3. Who would you want as your roommate? And who would you rather pass on?

Q4. A message to Japanese fans♡

★Answers★

Q1.
ㅡ Mother → None of the members nags a lot.
ㅡ Kwangsoo → D.O. When you say ‘weird guy’ the only person that comes to mind is him.
ㅡ Yeonhee → Myself. Because I’m kind and little naive, and even if I’m a girl I think I’d get frustrated (hehe).

Q2. D.O. Because he’s a kind and nice person.

Q3. If it’s who I would like to room with, that’d be Xiumin or D.O beause they like cleanliness. The person I wouldn’t want to room with would be Suho. He doesn’t clean his room (hehe).

Q4. To our beloved Japanese fans: ‘EXO NEXT DOOR’ is something that the members worked on really hard, so please give it lots of love. Please enjoy the rest of our Japanese activities from here on out. I love you.

Q1.
ㅡ Mother → I don’t think any of the members is particularly naggy. Everyone is good at taking care of others
ㅡ Kwangsoo → I don’t think there’s anyone who’s a ‘weird guy’.
ㅡ Yeonhee → It’s a little disappointing, but I don’t think there’s any member that I could call an ‘ideal type’ (hehe).

Q2. Chanyeol. When you look at him he comes across rather boastful, but he’s actually very kind.

Q3. The person I want to room with is Baekhyun. Out of all the members, I get along with him the best. For someone I would pass on, it’d be Suho. I like cleanliness so I’d prefer someone who could clean.

Q4. ‘EXO NEXT DOOR’ has finally come out! If the drama make our fans happy, then I’m happy! I love you so much.

Q1.
ㅡ Mother → D.O. Whenever our room is messy he scolds me to clean up.
ㅡ Kwangsoo → Lay. Based on what people have said, he’s a pretty ‘weird guy’!
ㅡ Yeonhee → Chen. He’s kind and someone who can think about others; he seems like someone who gives others lots of love.

Q2. Naturally, D.O. He’s a nice and kind person.

Q3. I would like to be roommates with D.O or Xiumin. Because they like cleanliness, and when they clean, they’re fast! The member I wouldn’t want to live with are Suho and Sehun. From my experience, the floor ends up looking a lot like the closet (hehe).

Q4. Thank you for always waiting patiently! For those who didn’t come to our concert, please wait a little longer for the DVD. EXO will come to you soon^^ EXO-L Japan, I love you!

Q1.
ㅡ Mother → Suho! It depends on the time and situation, but he nags on occasion (hehe)
ㅡ Kwangsoo → All the members. Everyone’s strange (hehe).
ㅡ Yeonhee → All the members. Everyone’s so cool.

Q2. Both of them are good, it’s hard to choose!

Q3. As for members I’d like to room with, it’s everyone; anyone would be fine! There’s no one I wouldn’t want to live with.

Q4. EXO-L JAPAN!! This is our new drama that shows off our charms. Even though it isn’t much, please enjoy it! Thank you so much.

Q1.
ㅡ Mother → Chen. He comes to mind when you say ‘nags a lot’, because he’s always thinking of others.
ㅡ Kwangsoo → D.O. Sometimes I just dont understand him (hehe).
ㅡ Yeonhee → Xiumin. His personality is my ideal type. He’s kind!

Q2. Between the two, I’d choose Kai.

Q3. For the person I would like to room with, Chen. Because he loves cleanliness. Someone I wouldn’t want to live with, Suho. Because he doesn’t clean much.

Q4. I’m always thinking of our fans. Thank you for all your support! Kai, heart, open mind!!!1

(1Note: Kai is making a pun. The original Japanese, 'カイ、こころ’ (Kai, kokoro), employing the kun reading of character '心’, translates to 'Kai, heart/mind’. An alternative on reading of the same character, 'shin’, combined with the 'kai’ for '開’, gives 'kaishin’ (開心), meaning 'open mind’. Kai makes it clear that the pun is intended by following up with 'オーペンマインド’, 'open mind’ in English.)

Q1.
ㅡ Mother → If I had to choose among the members, since I’m the leader I’d say I nag the most. But, even though its not to the same extent, there is another member who nags. It’s D.O (hehe).
ㅡ Kwangsoo → D.O. He looks calm at first glance, but when he gets into something his becomes immersed and he becomes charming.
ㅡ Yeonhee → If we are talking about an ideal type, it’d be me. If I was a girl I’d choose a guy like me. Hahaha

Q2. Of course I’d choose the kind man D.O (hehe). The fad right now is 'badboy (tsundere) on the outside, gentle on the inside’, but I’m not into that. You need to be true to your heart. If not, you won’t be able to express your true feelings.

Q3. Sehun is a good roommate. He’s nice to live with now, and I’d like to continue living together. Someone I’d like to avoid is D.O because he always nags me to clean (hehe).

Q4. EXO-L Japan please give 'EXO NEXT DOOR’ lots of love. Let’s meet soon!

Q1.
ㅡ Mother → Suho! He’s the leader and needs to take care of each member, so he’ll nag.
ㅡ Kwangsoo → D.O! His way of thinking is different to that of normal people. The more you get to know him, the more you realise there isn’t anyone else like him in this world (hehe).
ㅡ Yeonhee → No one. I know all the members too well….

Q2. I can’t choose! But I like a cool and kind person.

Q3. Chen or D.O. Because their room is always clean. If I’m in a messy room it stresses me out.

Q4. We’ll show you an improved EXO haha ^^

Q1.
ㅡ Mother → Me. I want to try becoming a nagging, mother-like character to the members.
ㅡ Kwangsoo → Sehun. I don’t understand him completely, but what he tends to say…. is kinda strange. He is also impulsive…
ㅡ Yeonhee → D.O. If someone 'cool on the outside’ played Yeonhee, I think she’d be cuter. (I want to see how others react).

Q2. D.O. I can rely on him and he’s a good person.

Q3. The member I would choose as a roommate is Xiumin. He’s my roommate right now! I don’t regret anything. Someone I’d rather pass on is Suho. We used to live together…… I can’t really say anything here (hehe)

Q4. Please give 'EXO NEXT DOOR’ lots of support! You’ll enjoy discovering each of the members’ different personalities through their characters! -from Chenderella-

[160602] Hanryu Pia Interview: “D.O (EXO), ‘My first love was very warm and happy’, 'leading role début movie to be released on 11th June’”

EXO member D.O is starring in his first movie (distributed within Japan), ‘Pure Love’ (Directed by Lee Eun-hee). Ahead the film’s nationwide release on 11th June, D.O has sat down with us for an interview!!

D.O from the popular Korean group EXO will be starring in his first movie, ‘Pure Love’, set to be released on 11th June, nationwide (Note: ‘Pure Love’ is his first film that premiered in Japan.).

D.O has also had roles in projects such as, ‘It’s Okay, It’s Love’, ‘Cart’, and ‘I Remember You’, which gained him recognition as not only as an artist, but also as a young up-and-coming actor. He is set to make his Japanese big-screen début with his starring role in ‘Pure Love’.

The movie focuses on the bittersweet and innocent love story between a young boy and girl. Bumsil, played by D.O, supports the heroine Soo-ok (Kim Sohyun) in her struggle to walk. The earnestness and purity of the character shines through D.O. The pure mood of the film is highlighted with a kiss scene though an umbrella, which viewers shouldn’t miss.

Please look forward to the film. D.O has offered to speak to us a bit about the film ahead of its release.

— Do you recall what the first day of filming was like?

D.O: ‘I remember it. On the first day we filmed the scene where Soo-ok and Bumsil sit in the courtyard and talking about wanting to enter a singing contest. Because it was the beginning of filming, Sohyun was still quite nervous.

The director told Sohyun to hold my hand and not let go, so I didn’t let go of her hand for for the entirety of filming.

That seemed to work (hehe).

That scene wasn’t particularly lighthearted and cheerful, but rather, one where we were both embarrassed. By holding hands we were able to support each other.”

— What are the similarities with you and Bum-Sil and what are the differences?

D.O: “If you compare us side-by-side, (unlike myself) Bumsil is a very irritable person. If you’re looking at similarities between us, we’re both very masculine. On the other hand, Bumsil is very shy and awkward, which I don’t think is very much like me.”

— What is your favourite scene in the film?

D.O: “My favourite scene is one where the strong bonds between friends are suddenly broken due to an event. I’m not one of the key actors in that scene, but when the scene was shot the people playing the roles of friends made it look very realistic and ever since then that scene has stuck in my mind. The scene is very beautiful, it left the biggest impression on me.” — Which line left the biggest impression?

D.O: “The line from the trailer, ‘I will protect you forever’. It left the biggest impression on me. I think saying ‘I will protect you forever’ to a girl is very difficult. Also, I think this line really resonates with the main message of the film, thus leaving the biggest impression.” — In your opinion, what’s first love?

D.O: “When I think of first love… I still don’t fully understand it. But I think it’s the happiest and warmest type of feeling, that’s the type of feeling I associate with first love.” — Is there anything you remember about your first love?

D.O: “I believe my first love was when I was in my 3rd year of senior high school. At that time I remember it being a very warm and happy feeling. Of course I’ve had a lot of times where I have felt happy, but when I think about the happiness of being with a girl I think back to that time.” — Please talk about your first impression of Kim So-hyun and how that compares to your current thoughts about her.

D.O: “So-hyun has been working as an actress since she was very young, and even though she is 6 years younger than me, I still felt like she was very young.

But, as we talked more during filming, I thought her manner and maturity seemed beyond that of most people of her age. Because of that, I think our compatibility and the atmosphere during the filming were very good.”

— To get closer to Kim So-hyun, we heard you held her hand every day?

D.O: “Yes. It was a little awkward to hold her hand throughout filming on the first day. From when we first met, we held hands.

Before filming we would join hands and we wouldn’t let go until the director said ‘Action’, which is when we’d let go until the scene was over and then rejoin our hands again when it was done. We were always close and it felt really awkward, so even when it was cold I’d sweat.

But, I think it worked really well to get us over the first-day awkwardness. It helped create the needed awkwardness and innocence needed for the scene.”

— It’s said that the director used ’whispering into your ear’ as a special form of directing.

D.O: “It’s the same as how other directors work. The director whispers into your ear so the other actors don’t hear it. I think it drew out more realistic performances from the actors as well as showed more individual consideration from the director. It felt very warm and comfortable when the director did that.”

— It must have been stressful. Can you talk about a particular time that you found difficult?

D.O: “The hardest thing was the heat. We filmed between June and September and it was really hot. The staff as very kind and considerate, and it is because of them that everyone felt like family throughout the filming.”

— Please talk about how you think you’ve grown through this film as an actor.

D.O: “After each finished filming, I feel like I’ve grown a little. Even if I don’t notice it, I learn a lot from the other actors.

In this film, I think the most important thing I learned was the etiquette on set.”

— Is there a particular actor you admire?

D.O: “There are a lot of actors I admire and like. Jo Insung, Lee Byunhun…. There are also lots of foreign actors. It’s impossible to name them all, but I want to work hard to become a wonderful actor like the seniors I admire.”

— Please talk about what other type of characters you’d like to play.

D.O: “If I get the chance, I’d like to play a variety of characters, I’d like to challenge myself. Now, there are characters I haven’t played, such as a villains. I would really like to try to play a bad person.”

— Soon the film ‘Pure Love’ will be released in Japan; how do you feel about that?

D.O: “Ahh, it’ll be released in Japan soon…. I’m really happy about that. It’s a Korean-made film being released in Japan, so Japanese people and fans will be able to watch it, and that makes me really happy.

Please take some time to watch the film, and if it leaves you with a warm feeling, then I’m really happy.”

— D.O’s first first leading role in the film ‘Pure Love’ will be released in a nationwide roadshow starting from TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku in Tokyo.

“For my first love I miss—”

A bittersweet innocent and pure love story, which begins when a letter is delivered from 23 years in the past.

Film ‘Pure Love’

Plot: In 2014, Radio DJ Bum-Sil (D.O (EXO)) receives a letter. It’s from his first love. As the song ‘Dust in the Wind’ by Kansas plays in the background, a piece of his heart awakens to resurrect memories of his first love from 23 years ago.

The scene takes place in the summer of 1992.
During summer break, Soo-Ok (Kim Su-hyun) waits for Bum-Sil at their hometown island. Bum-Sil holds a secret love for Soo-Ok ever since he spend his childhood days happily by her side and held her close in order to ease her legs.

One day, Soo-ok falls in love with Youngil (Kim Kwon), who is a physician, which angers Bumsil when he finds out. It’s a misunderstanding, but ends up breaking up the friendship of not just the two, but the friends around them. Because of that, Soo-ok struggles to accept the new reality, which leads to her having to make a decision.

[160214] [bnt interview] Do Kyung Soo, His Growing Pains as an Actor

“I’m satisfied if you are happy with my acting and singing.”

Behind his clear smile, prudence is hidden. EXO’s D.O made a brave step forward as an actor. Recently, bntnews met him at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Seoul and had an interview about his movie Unforgettable.

Unlike his young age of 24, he became an innocent 17-year-old boy and took out people’s memories in summer days of 1991. He naturally melted in his character Bum Sil even the eyes and flashed back his old moments by reminiscing his first love.

“There is no definition in love. All the things are in same words. My first love wasn’t a happy one, it was sad and gloomy. The emotions that I felt in the past really helped in making the film go forward.”

Unforgettable highlights five friends’ friendship as well as the first love. Do Kyung Soo made special memories with the actors and actresses from the film that are Yeon Joon Suk (San Dol), Joo Da Young (Gil Ja), Lee David (Gae Duk) and Kim So Hyun (Soo Ok).

“Although we had a theme of the same age, I felt burdened since I’m the oldest among them at the first place. But, in the film, we were all 17 years old, we were like friends. They were so nice, so they took care of me well. All the actors from the movie became so close that we took shower together.”

In the film, Soo Ok (Kim So Hyun) is Bum Sil’s first love and sad memory at the same time. Amongst the scenes, they made their feelings highlight when they kissed an umbrella that was in between of them, and it was the scene that Bum Sil revealed his feelings for her well that he always protected her behind.

“Rather than kissing on lips, the umbrella kiss scene was well enough to fit in Unforgettable. I could feel the distance that wasn’t able to express and I thought the idea was brilliant.”

Do Kyung Soo made his potential as an actor through Unforgettable. From D.O of EXO on stages, he steadily built his filmography through drama It’s Okay, It’s Love, Remember You and movie Cart. He wiped off the prejudice of an idol group a long time ago.

“I’m very greedy. As much as I went through struggles, I earned a lot and became strong that made me happy. I feel different when I’m a singer and an actor. I communicate with the fans on the stage right away, but I feel emotions with the audiences on screens. Both of them are enjoyable, but the thing is I want to grow up with my age. Such a nature will be good. I don’t want to look young or old; I just want to show what I can show in my age.”

“I didn’t choose unique characters, but I felt ‘I want to be this character’ much. I felt like I had similarities with my previous characters and I could show totally different sides. I want to challenge in noir genre since I never experienced.”

Do Kyung Soo is growing up every moment with various roles. I chose actor Lee Byung Hun as his partner and couldn’t hide his fluttering hearts.

“Lee Byung Hun is so awesome. ‘Awesome’ contains so many meanings. I can’t express it into words, but I just think he is awesome. To be like him is also my goal. It feels like awesomeness requires years of experiences, but I don’t want to age fast.”

[151030] [TRANS] ELLE Korea November 2015 Issue - BaekHyun

  • Achieved double million-seller in album sales, A star with the fifth highest Instagram followers in Korea. Put down any kind of fancy rumor about EXO, Born in 1992, same age as ELLE Korea We see Baekhyun’s face clearly.

Last year when I saw a news article about EXO’s fandom exploding like an active volcano, I asked my younger female acquaintances, “Why does EXO have so much popularity?” A junior of mine who just got into EXO replied, “Sunbae (senior), just look at them. You just fall right into them!” And one day in 2015, while browsing through TV channels, I happened to see EXO’s performance. I couldn’t take my eyes off of the group of boys who somewhat resembled each other but were distinctly different, moving with agile gestures, coming together and apart while showing a powerful and sophisticated performance. This year the public had lots of opportunities to see EXO’s real abilities and merit. Each and every member’s presence became even more distinct. Baekhyun had promised a solo photoshoot for ELLE’s 23rd anniversary. We had prior knowledge of Baekhyun’s bright and cheerful image, but when we met him on set he was very polite with lots of sense and made a favorable impression as a young 24 year old man. Even though it was his first solo photoshoot, the shoot went smoothly with no awkwardness, and he sensed what the editor wanted before any direction was given. The most memorable thing was his positive energy that swayed even the cunning old editor! After finishing his interview, Baekhyun went on to practice for his upcoming dome concert this weekend. He said goodbye with a humble bow that almost broke his back in half.

Q: You’re born in 1992 right? Do you know this is a fateful meeting?
A: I heard that ELLE Korea was also born in 1992. I’m honored to have ELLE be my first solo photoshoot. There were lots of cuts (photos) but I felt like the shoot went by very quickly. Because when I have photoshoots with my members, it takes a very long time. If one person out of 8 close their eyes, we have to retake the picture.

Q: You’re 24 in Korean years. To be honest, I thought you were younger.
A: Many people say I look younger. My members are all mid-twenties. Nowadays there are many groups that debut from their teenage years, but we weren’t that young.

Q: EXO is already on their way to 4 years since debut.
A: I still can’t forget our first debut showcase. Honestly, I don’t get nervous for many things. I think, “I’ll just do it the way I practiced.” But when I heard the fans’ cheers during the intro video, I shivered from head to toe. Even if I feel tired, once I stand on stage, the tiredness goes right away. It must be my body constitution.

Q: From when did you want to be a singer?
A: I announced it to my parents when I was 11. I told them I don’t think I could sit at an office and work all day when I grow up. I can’t sit still in one place because my personality is so outgoing and lively. I’d hum the songs of singers who came out on TV, and my friends would me that I was good [at singing], and from then I really wanted to do it. Then in 6th grade, I saw Rain perform and officially grew my dream to be a singer. I thought it was really cool to see just one person fill a whole stage.

Q: I heard you had the shortest training period in your team.
A: I came to Seoul to take an entrance exam when I was street-casted in front of the school, and within one year from entering the company, I debuted. More than anything, I’m thankful towards my members. I just put the clothes on of an already made team, but they happily welcomed me. No one was mean to me.

Q: Don’t you think it’s because of your social skills?
A: It’s true that I don’t have a very shy personality. Even if it seems like they kind of don’t like me, I still go towards them. And if I just maintain basic manners, everyone seems to like me. Especially if I greet sunbaes (seniors), they seem to show lots of love.

Q: Where did you learn such social skills?
A: I learned naturally from school of course. There are many celebrities who couldn’t fully experience school life but luckily I became a trainee after completing middle and high school. As I work, I understand the saying that school is like a small society. When I’m with my members, I really feel like I’m at school.

Q: They call you the team’s mood-maker. Do you like making those around you happy?
A: I don’t like serious or heavy moods. If the mood seems to go down, I chatter loudly by myself. Honestly, when I was younger I didn’t know what being depressed or sad was. I thought, “Is it that uncomfortable feeling you get when it rains?” When others seem down, I would keep talking to them and make them laugh. If you don’t shake off sad thoughts and let them grow in your heart, it gets harder to win over them in the future.

Q: Then how about when you have concerns?
A: I tell my members everything. I don’t hold anything in. The thing with having a heavy heart, even if you don’t get any answers, just talking about it with someone lightens the load. And my members aren’t the type of friends who would go out and tell others about my problems. I’m so happy to have friends to share my thoughts with.

Q: You were the MC of a special broadcast last Chuseok. If you were to review/criticize yourself on being an MC?
A: Because I was with such veteran sunbaes, I looked like a guest (laughs). I learned a lot. I especially learned that to be a good guest, you have to know a lot. Both Kim Gura and Yoo Seyoon sunbaes would talk fluently, whatever the subject be. I need to read more books. It’s embarrassing but the only books I remember are the recommended ones I read in middle school. I’m not very good at sticky (t/n: time-consuming) things. Rather, I’m the type to jump from one thing to the next.

Q: What do you enjoy doing most lately?
A: I like playing games. Haha. Recently, I exercise a lot. Honestly, the first time I went to the gym it was so hard I almost gave up. But I held it in and did it a few more times, and when I went to shower it felt really good. I recommend it to people who are thinking of dieting (laughs).

Q: What’s something you want to learn or get better at?
A: Rather than other things, I want to get better at singing. Because I wanted to be a singer from the start. I want to sing so well that people say “Wow” in admiration. Not someone who sings while showing off their techniques but someone who lets go of everything and sings a song that anyone can relate to. I haven’t had many opportunities to sing by myself but in the future, I want to sing to a lot of people.

Q: Which EXO song do you personally like the most?
A: “Love Me Right.” It’s a song with a funky feel so it makes everyone excited. I think it reveals our real selves on stage. Because our members are all very playful in real life. After performing a powerful song like “Wolf,” our members are excited to perform a song more like our natural selves.

Q: EXO promoted a lot this year. You had a lot of opportunities to show the public your group’s charms and capabilities.
A: I don’t know how time passed so quickly. It feels like yesterday I filmed “Call Me Baby’s” teaser video and was waiting for the album to be released, but after the repackage album and our concerts, it’s already October. We didn’t get to promote on a lot of music shows but I feel like we promoted in various places. It was very fun. Whether EXO as a group or as an individual member, I’m very proud of ourselves.

Q: When do you really feel EXO’s “outstanding” popularity?
A: When I hear our fans’ cheers. Whether at a performance or at an awards ceremony, our fans always scream for us. We’re very thankful for all the love we receive, but maintaining our popularity isn’t our only goal. “What are you guys doing? We have to go higher.” Our members say this a lot.

Q: Do you have anywhere higher to go? You’re the group with the most album sales in Korea this year.
A: We have to be Korea’s number one. I never once thought that we were at the top. I still feel like we’re rookies. Wherever we go, we greet our sunbaes and staff to the fullest. When we come down from a stage, our members get together and say, “Why is our dancing like this? We have to practice more.” We have to continue working with a humble mind. I like our teamwork and mindset right now.

“When I have any worries, I tell my members everything. The thing with having a heavy heart, even if you don’t get any answers, just talking about it with someone lightens the load.”

[150903] MAGAZINE M: PURE HEART [w/ D.O.]

pure heart: 1991, i rode the sea’s breeze and found my first love

(image above) 2. In order to get medicine from Youngil, the army surgeon who had set up a temporary clinic in the church, Suok runs errands. Beomsil, unaware of why she is, sees Suok helping Youngil and becomes angry.  Do Kyungsoo expressed regret with “Beomsil is honestly a simple, pure kid, but in the end he had to show anger.” 4. Even in reality, the five leads are of similar age. Every time they shoot a scene all together, it is filled with bright laughter. From the left: Ju Dayoung, Lee David, Kim Sohyun, Yeon Junseok, Do Kyungsoo.

▸ August 25, afternoon, late summer’s drizzle. Filming is in full swing in a small church of the village of Apyeong, nestled among rice fields. “Puhahaha, I’m sorry. I’ll do that over,” Do Kyungsoo (22), who acts as the country boy Beomsil, cannot hold back a laugh. The five other actors nearby follow. The laughing virus that started like this does not go away so easily and makes its rounds around them. “Let’s just have a good laugh and go again,” director Lee Eunhee (37) responds, looking upon them with a mother’s smile.

This place the young actors fill to the brim with their youthful energy is the filming site for the movie Pure Heart (release planned for the first half of next year). Its protagonists are five friends who brightly laugh and chat together in the island village they were raised: Suok, Beomsil, Sandol, Gaedeok, and Gilja. 1991 — Suok, too unwell to attend school, awaits the return of her friends who had gone to study on the mainland. Between these seventeen-year-old friends, every second is full and sweet. Pure Heart is a fantasy melo that spans both the present’s 2015 and the past’s 1991, and is the director’s debut feature length film.

On this day, they filmed a conflict between Suok and Beomsil, who has a crush on her. Beomsil suddenly becomes angry at the sight of Suok helping Youngil, an army surgeon who had come to their village. It is because unlike Suok, who believes Youngil can fix her illness, he knows of Youngil’s different intentions. The space was cramped, but although fifty staff members had to work hard to move equipment and rigging across the chapel’s seats each time a camera had to be relocated, the air was relaxed. The lead actors preserved the atmosphere of an intimate village by unwarily mixing with Goheung’s residents and freely running child actors. The director says, “Jupiter Film’s representative Ju Pilho’s hometown is Goheung. On his recommendation I came here, and I liked its comfortable, warm atmosphere and people so I picked it as our main film location. It is against the backdrop of this deep blue ocean and green forests that these seventeen-year-old friends will grow emotionally.”

Pure Heart is a film filled with the young actors’ energy. It features Kim Sohyun (16) who acted two-for-one in the recent drama Who Are You — School 2015; idol group EXO member Do Kyungsoo who showed nuanced acting in the film Cart and the drama IOIL; Lee David (21), a solid rising actor of the next generation; as well as Lee Junseok (20), Ju Dayoung (20), and Kim Kwon (26). Director Lee Eunhee says, “Do Kyungsoo adjusted and paid ₩22000 (~18 USD) to exercise at the local gym, and Kim Sohyun even visited Goheung’s sauna with her mom. Yeon Junseok stays even when he doesn’t have to film. All the actors worked hard to become people of Goheung.”

Q: Your thoughts on sending off two months of summer here.

Do Kyungsoo: I wonder if I’ve ever been this happy in my life. It’s to the point that it feels like every second on site has been happy. Should I say it feels like falling in love for the first time?

Q: What was most memorable?

Do Kyungsoo: We spent eleven days on Deukryang island, near Goheung, for filming. It was somewhere where we only had the ocean and our quarters. The supermarket was far away. We went fishing together, and caught around eleven fish.

Q: You seem familiar with Jeolla-do’s dialect.

Do Kyungsoo: Now it even slips out in everyday talk.
